The UK government is working hard to support SMEs to become more sustainable, offering increased funding in the form of EV charge point grants. As electrical vehicle registration continue to grow month-on-month, there’s never been a better time for SMEs to apply for EV charger support.

Can I claim the EV infrastructure grant?

The grant is designed to support small-to-medium sized enterprises looking to deploy charging infrastructure across their sites. Suitable businesses must have no more than 249 employees to be eligible for this EV charge point grant. Additionally, the business must either be registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC in order to access the funding.

What are the grant specifics?

  • One application has to be handled by one installer.
  • Each grant application can be up to a maximum of £15,000. If more charging points are required, the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) can be used
  • The chargers must be on the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) approved list.
  • A business can claim up to five grants in total, but that must be across separate sites which the business either owns, leases or rents
  • The grant cannot be used for commercial purposes, i.e. charging visitors for usage. The charging provisions can only be used by the staff – including fleet purposes.
  • The EV charge point grant can be used for current EV charger installation as well as scouting future charge point locations – At least one working charger must be installed

Does the EV charge point grant apply across the whole country?

The grant covers England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Currently, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not eligible for the grant.

My site has difficult access rights or requires access to another property. Am I still eligible?

Yes, you can still access this infrastructure grant. Should installation require cabling or otherwise through another person’s property (or even public land) written permission is required from all parties and must be agreed using a legal binding method.

Is my business’ parking suitable?

  • Does your business own the land (or have sole legal rights to it)?
  • Is it private off-street parking?
  • Is your parking clearly associated with your business? I.e. on site or in close proximity to your site?
  • Do you have at least 5 spaces which can be converted to clearly marked?

Are there any other infrastructure requirements?

The EV infrastructure grant supports the cost of installing the necessary infrastructure for charging points, and for future charging points to be installed.

The EV charge point grant must include – at the very least – the following:

  • A new electrical connection at a metered electrical supply point
  • A dedicated, safe and unobstructed route for electrical cabling from the electrical supply point to the installed charging points as well as any future connection locations
  • Provisions to facilitate the safe installation of an electric vehicle charging point

How much can I claim through the EV infrastructure grant?

  • Businesses can claim up to £500 for the charging infrastructure per parking space
  • Businesses can claim up to £350 towards the purchase and installation of a charging socket
  • The total amount of grant funding available cannot be more than 75% of the cost of the installation of the charging points and infrastructure charged to the customer

What else does the grant cover?
Not only does the EV charge point grant support with the installation of charging infrastructure, the grant can support signage, associated civil engineering work, grid connections and software to manage and maintain the chargers.
